Biological Cultures

Facility Description

The Biological Cultures Service (CBCS) is a CicCartuja scientific service, directed and advised by the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis.

This service is mainly oriented to the maintenance and growth, with scientific research proposals, of photosynthetic organisms, such as eukaryotic microalga and cyanobacteria. For that, the service maintains collections of these types of microorganisms for use by the scientific community in general. In addition, the service supplies to the members of the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis with competent cells of several strains of the enterobacteria Escherichia coli for use in molecular biology.

Equipment

The CICcartuja Biological Cultures Service makes use of different equipment placed in the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis to carry out the tasks of growth and maintenance of the microorganism collections.

  • Controlled environment chambers for growth of microalga and cyanobacteria: These culture chambers allow temperature control between 15 and 45 ºC, lateral and/or sagittal illumination with led tubes and the supply of different air-CO2 mix to liquid cultures.
  • Controlled environment chambers for growth of higher plants: These plant chambers are able to control parameters as temperature (between 10 and 45 ºC), relative humidity, light intensity and photoperiod.
  • Incubators with rotational agitation and temperature control in a range between -20 and -80ºC for Escherichia coli growth.
  • Incubators with rotational agitation, photoperiod and temperature control in a range between -20 and -80ºC for photosynthetic microorganisms growth.
  • Ultrafreezers -80 ºC for cryopreservation of microorganism strains.
  • Nitrogen liquid ranger for cryopreservation of microorganism strains.

In addition, the service has several microorganism collections, which are maintained in liquid/solid cultures or cryopreserved at very low temperature.

Operating Standards

The request for microorganisms to the culture service is made by sending the request form to the same, in which the shipping and billing information, requested microorganisms and preferred method of transportation must be indicated. This form allows the service to send the applicant an offer to provide services that must be returned digitally signed (preferably). Upon receipt of the required credit reservation or order number, the service sends the requested microorganisms to the applicant.

CBCS normally supplies 2 x 10 ml tubes of liquid medium or agar slope (preferently), depending on the method of maintenance of the strain. Normally 1-2 weeks are requested, although orders for cryopreserved material may need longer.

Note: Not all strains in CBCS collection are available for distribution.
