Our colleagues Federico Valverde and Irene García are participating in the program Espacio Protegido, on Canal Sur, on the occasion of the ‘7th International Fascination of Plants Day’
With an estimated 250,000 species, plants are a testament to the boundless creativity of nature; each species is a masterpiece of evolution, finely adapted to its ecological niche. However, their importance goes beyond mere biodiversity; plants are the true stewards of life on Earth, serving as primary producers of biomass and forming the foundation on which entire ecosystems thrive. The wonders of plants extend far beyond their role as providers of sustenance. They are the pharmacists of the natural world, gifting us with medicines that heal and cure. They are the weavers of fibers, clothing us with textiles that protect and comfort us. They are the alchemists of chemistry, synthesizing compounds that fuel our industries and enrich our lives. Plants are air purifiers, removing pollutants from the atmosphere, replenishing it with oxygen so that we can breathe, and helping us combat climate change. The seventh ‘International Fascination of Plants Day’ will be organized by plant scientists and enthusiasts around the world and coordinated by the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO). In Andalusia, the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis, under the CSIC, invites high school students to immerse themselves in an experiment to analyze some of the effects of climate change on plants.
