Chromatography Facility

The IBVF High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography (GC) services are analytic services designed for the identification and quantification of different types of metabolites.

The services rely on two HPLC systems and two GC systems and include system initialisation and operation, the development of sample separation protocols, identification and quantification of the metabolites to be analysed, the preparation of a results report (including calibration results), and the calculation of results for problematic samples. The user is responsible for extracting and derivitising (if necessary) the samples, while the service technician is responsible for mounting the chromatography columns, programming the separation protocol, preparing the mobile phases and the sample vials, performing sample injections onto the column(s), and preparing the results report.

 The chromatography service has been used for the following applications:

1) GC

- Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAMES)

- Ethylene (Nitrogenase Activity)


- Aminoacids (through PICT derivitisation performed by the technician)

- Organic acids

- Ethanol

- Carotenoids

- Nitrates

- Thiols

- Sugars (monosaccharides and disaccharides)

- ADP-Glucose

- Cyanides
